What is it good for?

Like the Edwin Starr song, WAR, preseason what is it good for? Absolutely nothing. That may not be 100% true but to me it’s the overwhelming theme of the NFL's exhibition season. Preseason WAS to help teams and players get ready and in shape for the regular season. It started when players had and needed 2nd jobs in the off-season to make ends meet. Now even the smallest of paychecks should be enough for a player to focus his efforts on football and football alone. Players are in shape, they have private routines and personal habits not cultivated by past players, hence the need, then, for these games and a hard camp. Now, it's just not the same and we all know why the hard nosed camp and up to 5 preseason games come about every August. MONEY and lots of it for the league, owners and in part the players. Listen, I know players don't get paid till the regular season. The small stipend they receive during camp is nothing to write home about, but the revenue generated during preseason helps pay the players during the year. With all that said PLEASE CAN WE GET RID OF 2 weeks of Camp and Preseason? It's a joke, all every team needs is a few weeks to get ready and might I remind you that every teams gets about the same amount of prep time. Meaning with six weeks or three weeks of camp all teams will be equal. And how much does holding camp cost? Less camp time means less money spent. I know I’m not the only one who wants to shorten the preseason, but it sure seems like it. The Redskins and Colts play 5 preseason games in 08’ YIKES!
